I have wanted to get a puppy for a few months now, and finally pulled the trigger this weekend. I wanted a dog that was medium to large, didn’t shed a whole lot, and was not going to be overly hyperactive.
I had originally wanted a goldendoodle (half golden retriever half poodle), but thought they might be too hyper and high maintenance for me. After doing more research I thought a Bassett Hound would be the perfect dog since they are so lazy, however they shed a ton…. so definitely not a good fit.
After searching around a little bit I found the cutest dog that matched my criteria at a local rescue. She is half Shar Pei half Boxer and will grow to be around 45 pounds. The reason why I picked the dog is because Boxers are relatively mellow and Shar Pei’s don’t shed.
Her name is Liberty. I love my country very much so I thought it would be a fitting name
Here she is about five minutes after we decided to buy her:
Liberty, Shar Pei / Boxer Mix
Here she is playing around in my house shortly there after.
So far, I have had Liberty for two days and we have had three accidents inside the house. I try to take her outside often and reward her everytime she goes. She is only 11 weeks old, so I am sure she will get the hang of it soon. This is my first time raising a puppy on my own so I am really trying hard to do a good job. Is having puppy daddy anxiety normal?
Congrats! I’m happy to hear you got her from a rescue - there are so many animals in need of a good home, and local resources are the way to go!
She’s adorable! You’ll no doubt do a great job as a puppy parent. The most valuable tidbit of info I can think of, aside from housebreaking without puppy pads/newspaper, is crate training. If Liberty knows that the crate is her den, everything else becomes so much easier. After Lily’s knee fracture last year, Adam and I made sure to crate her during the day to avoid more heartache. Nowadays, Lily immediately goes to her crate when we’re ready for work or goes on command. Her favorite treat? Ham. ;p
Best wishes for your new furbaby!

PS I should submit this comment before Adam drives me crazy because he wants his Mac laptop back. lol!
@AKE Yep, the rescue was called “Save A Life”. Definitely check them out if you ever decide to get a doggie.
@Marilyn Thanks for the comment. I must say, though, Lilly is about the sweetest dog ever. I hope Liberty turns out to be as sweet and well tempered. I do crate train her at night and luckily enough she doesn’t cry or anything. Matter of fact, I have found her laying in her crate on her own accord on several different occasions.
Liberty is adorable! Good choice. When she gets bigger we can hook her and Jackson up for a date in your back yard or the dog beach by our place.
Looks like a great dog. Need any advice,I raised Luke from 8wks old.He is a yellow lab. http://twitpic.com/50ioz My dad is a Veterinarian and so was my grandfather. Good Luck, Any questions feel free to email or http://www.twitter.com/markericjohnson
For ultimate safety, be sure to keep the dog away from Randy Mountz’s wig glue. I hear that stuff can be toxic…
